Don Reichert

The Life and Work of a Canadian Artist

1932-2013

Born in Libau, Manitoba, Don Reichert lived the majority of his life in Winnipeg city, but drew immense inspiration from time spent in the rugged boreal forest, lakes and granite outcroppings of the region. For 23 years Don taught painting at the University of Manitoba, where he shared his creative drive with hundreds of art students and colleagues, and his influence reverberates to this day with current artists. Don was at the forefront of the generative art movement in Canada from 1960’s. His large landscape-inspired canvases evoke the earth, water and sky upon which they were based. He worked with acrylic and brush on paper in almost calligraphic style. He built cameras, took photographs, and manipulated these both digitally and physically, by cutting and re positioning areas and adding paint. His thousands of handdrawn skulls made a personal and political message. Don’s works are held in major collections in Canada and abroad.
